NARKANDA HILLS
Narkanda has a mythological significance. Its history dates back to the days of the Mahabharata, when, as myth holds it, the Pandavas resided in the hills of this town during their exile. In the recent history, the town was ruled by Sankar Varma, the king of Kashmir, which followed the invasion by Muhammad Ghazni. The area was then ruled by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Rajput king. Further, the place came under Mughal rule, until it was invaded by The Gorkhas, under the leadership of Amar Singh Thapa, in 1768. In the late 18th century, the Anglo-Gorkha war led to the defeat of the Gorkhas and the area coming under British rule. Narkanda hence came under the Shimla district .
